a simple woman's daybook

Mary at Owlhaven posted this one, so I thought I would tag along.

For Today…

Outside my window… a wonderful roaring stream

I am thinking… that it is a constant struggle to put my family's wants before my own

I am watching… a mule deer hunting show on the outdoor channel because summer TV stinks and hubby needs to clear out the DVR

I am thankful for… living in a beautiful place with my men who all adore me

From the kitchen… not much - I need to get more serious about my meal planning.

I am wearing… tan shorts, cute, $10 brown top from Costco and of course, a fleece (evening chill has set in)

I am reading… Luke's Story

I am praying… for others mostly.  For healing and protection.

I am creating… a crocheted baby blanket (as always) that I have no idea who it will go to

I am looking forward to… camping this weekend, then beach with my family in late July

A picture for today...  my shiny forehead me, my mom, my 87 year old grandpa, my sister and my cutie pie niece all smiling just to be together again after my sweet grandmother's memorial service a couple of weeks ago.

where were you?

I got this from Nicole's blog and thought it was appropriate for this day that none of us should forget.

challenger

Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster - January 28, 1986. I was in sixth grade and I specifically remember my teacher bringing the television into the classroom so we could watch the news coverage. The fact that a teacher was on board made it particularly emotional for everyone.

ocitybombing

The Oklahoma City Bombing - April 19, 1995. I was finishing up my junior year of college and I remember watching the coverage on my little 13 inch color t.v. in Olsen Hall. I remember sitting - stunned when pictures like this came on the screen.

dianafuneral Princess Diana’s Death - August 31, 1997. With three full months of marriage under my belt, hubby and I were visiting my dad and step-mom at their lake house in southwestern Michigan. I remember my dad coming into our bedroom (without knocking, I might add - I think he forgot I was in there WITH MY HUSBAND!) and telling us that she had died. Sad weekend. We watched the entire funeral coverage.

911neverforget Attack on the Twin Towers - September 11, 2001. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was at our Ft. Myers, Florida home with our five month old baby boy... all was right in the world. My husband had just left for work and I was now a stay at home mom. Shortly after he left, he called me to tell me to turn on the t.v. I watched the second tower get hit and both of them fall, as well as watch as a reporter at the Pentagon got knocked over while reporting live during the attack there.

I have to say, I was forever changed. I heard a talk radio host today say that we all need to have the "September 12th mentality." I deliberately do not write about politics on my blog, but I will write just one thing today. Say what you want about George Bush's imperfections and mistakes, but the fact that we have not been attacked again in seven years is something I am grateful for and I think he and all the men and women behind the scenes have done very well.

I try to remember each day to live for the day, for we do not know what tomorrow might bring.

I've Been Tagged

Natalie tagged me for a meme. Heck, I don't know what meme is, but it looks like fun and this is apparently how it works:
1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player tags 5 people and posts their name, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they've been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

The Questions and My Answers. . .
What I was doing 10 years ago?:
Ten years ago I was finishing up my first year of marriage. We were living in a little apartment in Buffalo, New York and I was working at a consumer products testing lab as an account manager. We had two dogs and walked them three miles every night after work. Our kitchen was purple, our house was tiny and we were learning how to be grown ups in the real world.

Five Snacks I enjoy:
In a perfect, non weight-gaining world. . .
1. Double stuff Oreos
2. Apple fritters from Dunkin Donuts
3. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
4. Double thick vanilla milkshakes
5. Sugary candy

In the real world. . .
1. Popcorn with salt, no butter
2. Pirates Booty
3. Mini raw carrots
4. Graham crackers
5. Double stuff Oreos (sigh)

Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
1. Pay for kids college
2. Complete Big Canyon
3. Take care of our families
4. A large chunk to Children’s Hope Chest
5. Force my husband to retire and do something he loves

Five jobs that I have had:
1. Receptionist at a chiropractor’s office
2. Account manager at a consumer products testing lab
3. Inside sales rep at an IT consulting company
4. Pharmaceutical sales rep
5. Mom of four gentlemen-in-training (best and toughest job)

Three of my habits:
1. Reading to my boys everyday
2. Staying up too late
3. Arriving 10 minutes late to almost everything (sigh)

Five places I have lived:
1. Pearl River, NY
2. Barrington, IL
3. Upland, IN
4. Ft. Myers, FL
5. Park City, UT

Five People I Want to Get to Know Better:
(A nice way of saying TAG!) (Amy and Andrea, I wanted to pick you, but thought better of it until your blogs become habits!!)
1. Kate
2. LadyKong
3. Kristin
4. Jenny
5. Christa

About Me

My photo
Messy and wonderful perfectly describes my life as a wife and mom of five. I'm passionate about advocating for orphans by telling their stories and encouraging adoption and orphan care. My schedule is messy and wonderful as I am charged with four sons and one daughter. We love living in our little mountain ski town. We do a little camping, a little skiing, a little hunting, and a lot of laughing and loving. Life is dirty and loud around here but we wouldn't want it any other way. Okay, maybe a little less dirty!
